520[ ] |b his book is intended to focus attention on sanitation facilities on the householder`s property, which are appropriate for some urban areas, as well as rural areas and small communities. This book has three parts. Part I deals with the background to sanitation-health, sociological, financial and institutional issues, and the technologies available for excreta disposal. Part II provides indepth technical information about the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the major types of on-site sanitation facility. Part III describes the planing and development processes involved in projects and programmes. Annexes on reuse of excreta and sullage disposal are also included. The book has been compiled with the needs of many different readers in mind. It is hoped that this book will prove useful for engineers, medical officers and sanitarians in the field, and also for administrators, health personnel, planners, architects, and many others who are concerned with improving sanitation in rural areas and underprivileged urban communities in developing countries.
